Drywall Installation Cost Calculator

Planning to hire the drywall out — or budgeting a remodel? Enter the surface area to cover and this estimator gives you the sheets required plus a cost range: materials, labor, and the installed total. The ranges are US national figures drawn from current published cost guides (sources at the foot of the page) for standard 1/2 in board, hung, taped and finished to Level 4. Treat the result as a budgeting range, not a quote — the notes below explain what pushes a real quote up or down.

The formula

Sheets = Area × (1 + Waste %) ÷ 32 ft² (4×8) or 48 ft² (4×12)
Materials = Area × $0.50 to $0.85 per ft² (board, mud, tape, screws, corner bead)
Labor = Area × $1.00 to $2.70 per ft² (hang, tape, finish to Level 4)
Total installed = Materials + Labor = $1.50 to $3.55 per ft²

The per-square-foot ranges are the published 2026 US figures detailed in the sources below: all-materials cost of $0.50–$0.85 per sq ft and hang-and-finish labor of $1.00–$2.70 per sq ft, from a cost guide built on Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, the Federal Reserve's FRED gypsum price index and current retail board pricing. They assume standard 1/2 in board on ordinary walls. Ceilings, high walls, Level 5 finish, texture, demolition and small jobs with minimum call-out fees all price above the range — one source puts installed ceilings at $2.00–$3.75 per sq ft against $1.60–$3.50 for walls.

Estimate only — read before budgeting. These are US national ranges checked in October 2026, not a quote and not a price promise. Drywall pricing varies by region (labor rates alone can differ by 40% across the country), by finish level, and by job size and date. Use the range to sanity-check bids, then get two or three local quotes before committing.

Worked example

Example: a 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, walls and ceiling = 528 ft², 10% waste on sheets.

For comparison, the cost guide behind these rates works this exact room at roughly $845–$1,980: published installed totals include contractor overhead and profit on top of raw materials and labor, which is why real quotes tend to land in the upper half of this calculator's range.

Frequently asked questions

How much does drywall installation cost per square foot?

Nationally in 2026, about $1.50–$3.55 per square foot of drywall surface for materials plus hang-and-finish labor at Level 4 — materials $0.50–$0.85 and labor $1.00–$2.70. Published installed totals that include contractor overhead and profit run $1.60–$3.75 per sq ft, and one tracker of 847 real residential invoices put the Q1 2026 median at $2.41 per sq ft.

Why do drywall quotes vary so much for the same room?

Region is the biggest factor — labor rates differ by up to about 40% nationally — followed by finish level (Level 5 skim-coating costs noticeably more than standard Level 4), ceilings and high walls (slower, more labor), job size (small jobs carry minimum charges), and extras like demolition, texture or sound/fire-rated board. Two honest quotes can still differ by 30% on crew availability alone.

What is the difference between this and the Drywall Calculator?

The Drywall Calculator counts materials — exactly how many 4×8 and 4×12 sheets a given area needs. This page adds the money: a materials and labor cost range for having the work installed, using the same sheet math underneath.

Do ceilings cost more than walls?

Yes. Overhead work is slower and often needs lifts or a second pair of hands. The sources below put installed ceilings at $2.00–$3.75 per sq ft against $1.60–$3.50 for walls, so if most of your area is ceiling, budget toward the top of this page's range.

Does the estimate include painting or texture?

No. The range covers hanging, taping and finishing to Level 4 (a smooth, paint-ready surface). Texture is an add-on, and painting is normally quoted separately — guides commonly put it at roughly $0.75–$2.00 per sq ft on top, depending on primer and coats.
